Hatstone’s Alex Carus and Michael Shenkin recognised in the Legal 500

Hatstone Group Partner Alex Carus has recently been recognised as one of three leading individuals in Jersey advising on structured finance and securitisation transactions by Legal 500. The Legal 500 is a respected guide to the world’s leading law firms, relied upon by many in the legal and finance industry. Alex also has extensive experience advising on all aspects of Jersey corporate and banking transactions, with a particular focus on real estate backed financings.

Michael Shenkin has also been named as one of ten “Next Generation Lawyers” for Private Client, Trusts and Tax in Jersey for the first time. Michael advises on all aspects of trusts and foundations together with all related company and commercial law issues, including FATCA and CRS, for a broad range of clients.

The rankings in The Legal 500 focus on the bench strength of the teams within law firms and the Next Generation recognises those who make a material difference to the practice’s offering.

For 29 years, The Legal 500 has been analysing the capabilities of law firms across the world, with a comprehensive research programme revised and updated every year. The Legal 500 assesses the strengths of law firms in 106 jurisdictions.

Alex commented

“I am absolutely delighted to have been recognised in this way by Legal 500. I have been advising on securitisation and structured finance matters since 2003 when I came to Jersey and this area has evolved rapidly over the years. Most recently I have enjoyed advising on two Initial Coin Offerings for clients. These utilise blockchain technology to create and issue new virtual coins or tokens. One offering relates to real estate development, finance and maintenance (Prime-Ex Perpetual) and the other to a long established and profitable business providing online binary options trading (Binary.com ICO).”

Group Partner Simon Vivian added:

“It is great for Alex and Michael to receive the recognition they deserve. We have a strong team in Jersey, which is dynamic, forward-looking and willing to help in a pragmatic and commercial way.”

Hatstone advises on a new ICO

Wittgenstein, a famous philosopher, once said:

A man will be imprisoned in a room with a door that is unlocked and opens inwards; as long as it does not occur to him to pull rather than push.’

He also said:

The limits of my language mean the limits of my world’.

Whilst attempts will be made to lock the door to the new brave world introduced by such innovative and exciting concepts as the ‘ICO’ and ‘blockchain’ our world has certainly been expanded by the new language introduced by this revolutionary technology such as ‘whales’, ‘dolphins’, ‘aggregators’, ‘ecosystem’, ‘pre-ICO’ and ‘smart contracts’.

Hatstone Lawyers has become the first law firm in Jersey to open a wallet for receipt of Bitcoins as payment for legal services.

The development was implemented after Hatstone recently advised on a new ICO, Prime Ex Perpetual, which links the clients’ new PEX tokens to the tangible world of real estate.  It offers prospective members a dividend based token with the option to be part of a new ecosystem designed to revolutionise how real estate is bought, developed and financed for onward sale to a purchaser.

The ICO is currently in launch phase with a date set for 15 November 2017.

Group Partner Carl O’Shea commented:

It is very exciting to work on an ICO project.  There is an initial steep learning curve for lawyers and advisers who have not dealt with this new technology before and whilst in the long run it will challenge the way lawyers will work it should be welcomed and encouraged. The enthusiasm generated by ICOs and the teams involved is infectious.”
