Shelley is both a lawyer and a chartered surveyor who specialises in construction law matters.
Shelley is a UK Barrister with over 17 years experience. He is also a Royal Institute of Surveyors Chartered surveyor (MRICS since 1990) and project manager. Shelley was called to the English bar by Middle Temple in 1998. He also holds a surveying degree awarded by Kingston University, London in 1988.
Shelley worked as a construction law solicitor for a top 3 London city firm (Shadbold & Co), completing the Qualified Lawyer Transfer Test with Distinction in 2000.
Shelley is a member of the Criminal Bar Association, Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Free Representation Unit.
Throughout his career he has been known for his attention to detail, especially regarding cost and ferocious competitiveness in furthering his client’s position. Shelley has worked on all manner of construction contracts from inception to completion, initially as a surveyor/ project manager and then as a lawyer.
Prior to project inception, Shelley advises clients on the most appropriate contractual arrangement to successfully deliver the entity within time and cost. This may be by way of standard form, amended standard form or bespoke agreement followed by contractor selection by way of competitive tendering or negotiation with a favoured provider.
Shelley is often instructed to negotiate on behalf of clients in order to avoid litigation and therefore maintain ongoing client relationships.
As a consultant for London Underground he was instructed to provide a cost basis to challenge a multi-million pound construction claim from the contracting consortium on the £1 billion Northern Line project and successfully reduced the claim and helped the client avoid litigation.
Where negotiation fails, Shelley is well equipped to rigorously litigate on his client’s behalf. At Shadbolt & Co he headed a small team in successfully resisting a claim from Exxon Mobil against a small valve company PJValve & Pipe.
Recently, Shelley has added more general law including financial fraud to his armoury, which is invaluable when dealing with any monetary agreements, especially in this electronic age.
Shelley spends his leisure time involved in all manner of physical activities especially karate, boxing training and running as well as watching his beloved Manchester United football club. He is also a keen but basic artist and enjoys stand up comedy.
